Council Subcommittee on Illegal Blackfish HarvestsChairperson of the subcommittee, Jack Ferrera stated the group has found that the illegal harvest and sale of live blackfish has admittedly become a problem for both the recreational and commercial fishing community. To address this, they will likely recommend prohibiting possession of live tautog (blackfish) by anyone other than a New York State commercial foodfish license holder while they are in commercial fishing mode and/or in wholesale or retail commerce. Mr. Ferrera indicated that this recommendation was supported by the recreational and commercial members of the subcommittee and by law enforcement. The subcommittee would like to move forward with their recommendation at the next Council meeting.
