OpeningThis meeting was held in the Media Room at the Town of Brookhaven Offices. The Council’s usual meeting place, the offices of DEC’s Bureau of Marine Resources in East Setauket, were under renovation and unavailable. Chairman William Wise began the meeting at 2:20pm, allowing a few extra minutes for visitors traveling to the new and potentially unfamiliar meeting venue. He stated that, at the present time, two positions on the Council were vacant. Kerry Sullivan previously held the first position, a recreational fisheries slot that awaits a nomination from the Speaker of the State Assembly. He encouraged the councilors and audience members alike to contact the Speaker’s Office to request this be done soon. Councilor Thomas Melton recently resigned his position, which is filled through direct appointment by the DEC Commissioner appointment and does not need to await a legislative nomination. Mr. Wise has been informed that Mr. Melton’s position may be filled by the November 2005 Council meeting. Mr. Gordon Colvin, DEC’s Director of Marine Resources, alerted all present to two upcoming fishery-related meetings being held in New York: a meeting of the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council scheduled for 04-06 October 2005 in Southampton and a meeting of a team from the Ocean Studies Board of the National Academies that is conducting a review of approaches used to survey marine recreational fisheries, scheduled for 04-06 October 2005 in New York City. The draft minutes of the 12 July 2005 Council meeting were unanimously accepted as written.
