Bluefish

Regulations must be developed to implement provisions of the amendment to the fishery management plan for this species, including creation of a commercial catch quota. Mr. Colvin noted that the final decision on the plan should be made this fall for implementation on 01 January 2000. The main new compliance requirement is the state-by-state compliance system. There is no minimum size limit proposed for bluefish. DEC may propose overall and/or gear-specific trip limits for bluefish. The quota setting meeting of the Mid-Atlantic Council will take place in Philadelphia in the second week of August and will include bluefish, scup, sea bass, fluke, surf clams, ocean quahog, squid, and mackerel. The quotas for all these species will be low and painful to accommodate.
