Mosquito Spraying

Mr. Colvin reported that there has been some consultation with the DEC as to the appropriateness of Malathion spraying to control mosquitoes. The counties are using three different pesticides for ground and aerial spraying of adult mosquitoes. The DEC has reminded the counties that each pesticide comes with a federal EPA label specifying permitted use. Applying pesticides on or over water or wetlands is prohibited. Properly applied, there should be no fish kills. There have been some unverified reports of kills since the spraying started, including some in Staten Island fresh water ponds, which are still under investigation. Mr. Wise reminded the audience that saltmarsh mosquitoes are not suspected of spreading encephalitis. Mr. Colvin continued that any complaints about improper pesticide applications should be reported to the DEC. Professional application of pesticide requires that the applier be certified. If the State Public Health Department declared an emergency, that would take precedence over DEC regulations, but not necessarily over federal regulations on pesticide use.
