The By-catch Subcommittee had a workshop in March organized by MRAC Chairman William Wise and Mark Malchoff of New York Sea Grant Extension. The proceedings were published and distributed to the workshop participants, including DEC and state legislative staff. It was concluded that a state by-catch reporting system is required. The group needs to meet again. Councilor Doxsee suggested recommending to the Legislature allocating funds for a sampling study on by-catch. Mr. Wise will reconvene the group shortly to continue its discussions and to prepare legislative and regulatory recommendations.
