Plankton

Plankton Log - MedFlux II Cruise (S. Fowler)

N.B. This describes the principal phytoplankton and zooplankton which were collected as samples. It is not a comprehensive quantitative or qualitative listing of all species present in the water column, just the key species observed or used for analyses.

8 March 2005

Phytoplankton net:
Dinoflagelates Ceratium sp. (lots of them), no diatoms noted in samples.

Cindy and Lynn’s “black seed” sample of heavier residue rinsed from splitter:
Ceratium sp., small larval (?) pteropods swimming, *ostracods, *tintinnids (loricates) maybe Dictyocysta sp.,  Globogerina sp. (forams), Vorticella sp. (ciliates), many round dense black fecal pellets along with fragments of euphausiid fecal pellets.
*(very abundant)

Omari Zooplankton net:
Psuedothecosome pteropod (Cymbulia peroni), euthecosome pteropods (the larger Diacria trispinosa, Euclio pyramidata, Cavolinia gibbosa, Cavolinia inflexa, Cavolinia tridentata), northern krill/euphausiid (Meganyctiphanes norvegica), euphausiids (Euphausia krohnii, Nematoscelis megalops), salps (Salpa maxima), copepods (Calanus helgolandicus, Euchirella rostrata, Heterorhabdus sp.

10 March 2005

Phytoplankton net:
Brown phytoplankton soup was sieved through 300 um mesh.

<300um:  Dinoflagelates Ceratium contortum, Ceratium contrarium, Ceratium tripsos, and Goniaulax sp., copepidites, radiolarians, tintinnids, and no diatoms were noted!

>300um (Stuart elutriated this): radiolarians, acantharians, copepods (Euchirella rostrata, Calanus helgolandicus), some Ceratium, and fecal pellets.

Omari Zooplankton net:
Same zooplankton species that were collected on 8 March.

11 March 2005

Phytoplankton net:
Took sample for Stuart, the girls and us. Brown soup as previous collections containing many copepod larvae and copepidites, radiolarians, tintinnids, fecal pellets and a very few diatoms (Biddulphia sp. and Nitzschia sp.).

Omari Zooplankton net:
Same zooplankton species that were collected on 8 and 10 March.
