Important Dates and Stipend Information

Application Process

  • February 15 – application package must be received by this date.  Note: letters of recommendation and transcripts can be sent separately.
  • March 15 - target date for notification of acceptances

Important Information:

  1. Approximately 25% of applicants can expect a telephone interview by the target date, however if you do not hear from us by early April and you must decide on another offer, please contact Dr. Josephine Aller, Program Coordinator. Applicants who are not offered a position will be notified by e-mail by May.
  2. If you have already participated in an OCE-funded REU site you are NOT ELIGIBLE for a second internship except under unusual circumstances.
  3. It is the policy of the NSF Ocean Science Program that: "All students who are offered a position at this REU Site have until March 15th or later to accept or reject the offer. Any student who is asked to accept or reject an offer prior to March 15th should contact the Division of Ocean Science's REU Program Director, Lisa Rom at elrom@NSF.gov or 703-292-7709." This statement pertains to all Ocean Science funded REU sites.
  4. We will do our best to accommodate persons with physical disabilities that would restrict their participation in fieldwork. SBU is an EEO/AA Educator & Employer.

Summer Program

(tentative schedule)

  • June 1 (Sunday) –- Residence Hall open, meet other participants, dinner with Graduate student assistant
  • June 2 (Monday) – Breakfast and orientation at SoMAS, meet faculty mentors, program staff.
  • July 31 (Thursday) –- final presentations of summer research
  • July 31, August 1 (Thursday, Friday) – complete final papers
  • August 2 (Saturday) – depart for home

Students on quarter schedules may be accommodated if their quarters end too late to begin June 1.

Stipends and Other Financial Support:

REU interns can expect to receive a stipend of $450/wk, travel expenses, accommodations in air-conditioned dormitories with cooking facilities, and a meal allowance of $60/week. Infirmary and student activity fees are covered and allow complete access to health, library and athletic facilities on campus.  Please note: We will assist you with travel arrangements. Students will not be reimbursed for tickets they purchase without prior written permission of the Program Director.
