Interim Dive Policy

Assistant Professor Brad Peterson has assumed the responsibilities of Interim Dive Officer for SoMAS. Brad is a certified NOAA Scientific Diver with over 2800 research dives logged through various universities and institutions. Effective immediately(06/05/07), all scuba dives by SoMAS personnel must be approved in advance by Brad. He will assure that all divers comply with the following requirements:

  1. Up to date professional diver certification. All dive equipment to be used must have proof of a recent annual inspection and must meet all standard requirements. All divers must have DAN (Divers Alert Network) insurance. A dive plan must be submitted for approval at least 24 hrs. in advance of all dives, and a dive log should be filed within 72 hrs after a dive. Brad is currently working on establishing a web-based dive log to minimize the impact of this. No decompression dives are allowed.
  2. This includes all dives by any faculty, student or staff for purposes of education or research, whether using SoMAS vessels as a platform or not, and whether paid as an employee or as a volunteer.

The overarching goal is to assure the safety of all SoMAS personnel. Brad will strictly enforce this policy. If you currently are or plan to be diving for educational or research activities, please identify yourself to Brad so that he can work with you to begin the process of completing your dive folder.
