Viral Hemorrhagic Septicemia Outbreak

Mr. Colvin briefed the Council on an emergent disease problem among wild fish populations in Great Lakes and inland waters, including in New York - - viral hemorrhagic septicemia (VHS).  In an effort to reduce the spread of this disease, the US Department of Agriculture has prohibited the shipment of certain species of freshwater and anadromous fish into and within the states of the Great lakes basin, including New York.  DEC is developing emergency regulations to implement this ban in New York.  These regulations would include shipments of bait.  These regulations were not likely to immediately affect marine waters, but they will apply to the Hudson River.
