Fish Pot Tags

DEC is implementing a new regulation requiring those using commercial fish pots to have an identifying tag attached to each pot. Mr. Colvin informed the Council that the DEC has received requests from a few fishermen who have asked for a very large number of tags, into the thousands.  DEC staff have suggested to providing up to a certain number of tags free to fishermen requesting them; for requests beyond this minimum number, a per tag fee would be charged.  Mr. Colvin asked the Council for suggestions on what the base allocation of free tags should be.  There was a general consensus on the following: 0-100 tags free; 100-250 you pay per tag; 250+ you pay and must provide documentation that you have fished this number of pots in the past.
