Maximum Vessel Length Limit

Chairman Wise informed the Council that Mr. Paul Farnham has asked him to reintroduce to the Council for its consideration the topic of establishing a maximum vessel length allowed for commercial vessels fishing in State waters.  Mr. Farnham is a member of the New York State Surfclam/Ocean Quahog Management Advisory Board.  The Council has dealt with this issue several times in the past.  Mr. Farnham suggests a new maximum vessel length limit, which would be applicable to all commercial fisheries in State waters, not just to the ocean surfclam fishery.  His proposal is to allow an existing vessel to be replaced by a vessel no more than 10% longer, e.g. a vessel 80' in length could be replaced by a vessel no longer than 88'.

The Council discussed this suggestion but came to no conclusion or position regarding it.
