Mandatory Registration and Reporting of Commercial Fish Pots

Mr. Colvin explained that this would be a registration system for fish pots similar to that presently required for fyke nets, providing DEC with information on number and type of fish pots being used, as well as the quantity of fish of different species being caught. Among the concerns expressed were the difficulties of enforcing any new registration/reporting requirements in the commercial pot fishery. Clear definitions would need to be developed to separate fish pots from lobster pots. The Council expressed support for the idea of establishing registration/reporting requirements in the commercial pot fishery. The size and magnitude of the fish pot catch has been discussed by the Council for five years and it is time to get hard data. Several Councilors feel substantial restrictions on this fishery will clearly be warranted.
