The roller gear subcommittee started meeting three years ago about the impact of this gear on fishery habitat. Mr. Wise reported that its two findings were that the impact of roller gear on the seafloor and fishery habitat was undocumented at the time and that both the quantity and quality of various fishery habitats around Long Island, and the trawling pressure each experienced were also unknown. He stated that information on these latter issues would be necessary to develop factually-based recommendations for regulating the use of roller gear. The impact of fishing gear on habitat has now become a hot issue, and some new studies have since been initiated, but not enough.
