Shinnecock commercial trawl fishermen asked about recent DEC enforcement activity regarding reporting requirements for trucks transporting legally caught fish and crustaceans. Truckers now must carry documentation stating the name and address of the shipper and how much of each species was in each box. He was concerned about maintaining the confidentiality of information regarding a fishermans catches. Captain Otterstedt of DECs Division of Law Enforcement explained that requiring common carriers to have this information was an extremely important enforcement tool and the requirement had existed for some time. He agreed that the trucker could keep the bill of lading in a sealed envelope and destroy or return it to the fisherman after delivery was completed.
