Update--Special Commercial Hook &
Line Category for Summer Flounder

Mr. Colvin reported that the first season of the fluke hook and line quota had gone well. The commercial hook and line quota was 5% of the state’s annual commercial fluke quota. One hundred and twenty-five individuals had signed up for this category. He distributed a data sheet detailing information on fishing effort and landings to date by fishermen registering in this category. Mr. Colvin acknowledged the role played by Mr. Tom Jordan, head of the New York State Commercial Hook & Line Association, in discussions leading to the establishment of this special category and then its effective implementation. Some problems had been encountered with late or non-reporting of fishing activity and catches and 22 licensees may be denied their category permits next season for noncompliance with reporting. Mr. Colvin added that these special category permits were annual, so anyone holding a commercial fluke permit would be eligible next season to declare for the rod and reel category, with the possible exception of the 22 individuals mentioned above.
