Last spring, our South Campus community including MSRC, NY Sea Grant and Campus Security raised nearly $1,500 to contribute to the 2nd annual Stony Brook University fund drive for Habitat for Humanity. Our fundraising activities included a potluck luncheon, raffle, and a "Jail 'N Bail" game. The collective efforts of departments across the university raised nearly $65,000 - enough to cover the expenses to build one house and provide a home for a family in need on Long Island.

On Friday September 26th 2003, fourteen MSRC volunteers spent the day working on the Stony Brook funded house in Bellport. They cleaned out the back yard to make a safe place to play and we set up the first wall of the back yard fencing. The transformation of the back yard from junk yard to promising play yard was phenomenal! The family will be so happy! Construction is nearly finished. The Heredia family: Wilfredo, Paola and baby Angelica should be able to move into their new house by December.

On behalf of the Habitat for Humanity fundraising committee, we want to extend a big THANK YOU to all who donated generously (both time and money) and participated in the building!

Our volunteer building team included Steve & Rachel Cluett, Julia Todorov, Gillian Stewart, Doug Potts, Paul Pickhardt, Kristal Kallenberg, Gabrielle Dorr, Chris Clapp, Laura Cottrell, Christina Heilbrun, Gail Murray, Ann Zulkosky, and Nicole Maher.
