Evolutionary Fish Ecology

Research Interests

I'm interested in studying growth, mortality, and local adaptation in larval, juvenile, and adult stages of marine fish. I'm convinced that understanding how environmental and genetic variability affects growth and survival of fish at the individual level is one of the pre-requisites to comprehend the dynamics of fish populations. Currently, I'm focussing on two aspects in fisheries ecology, being (a) local adaptation in growth of fish populations across latitudinal gradients, and (b) assessing evidence for fisheries induced evolution in harvested fish stocks. So far, otolith microstructure analysis (i.e. the analysis of daily growth increments in fish otoliths) has played a key role in my scientific work. It will be complemented in the future by microchemical and meta-analytical approaches in what is meant to remain a "healthy" combination of field, laboratory, and modelling studies.
